Our Work
There is nobody who is peaceful without a house
We have built nearly 350,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1.5 million people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter since our founding over 30 years ago. It is most unlikely that these families would have been able to do so otherwise. A new Habitat home is completed somewhere in the world every 24 minutes!
Habitat seeks to help people caught in a rent-induced poverty trap. Underprivileged families chosen on the basis of need alone, purchase their own homes on low interest mortgages with Habitat.
They also contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity" to the building of their own home, or that of another family.
Donations of land, finance, and labour are sought from governments, businesses, churches, service clubs and individuals. All monies received, including mortgage repayments from those already in Habitat houses, go into Habitat for Humanity Australia's Domestic Fund (for Australian projects) or into Habitat for Humanity Australia's Overseas Aid Fund (for international projects). In each case, donations go directly to the provision of additional houses, except for a very small amount which covers direct administration expenses such as legal costs, postage etc.
Habitat for Humanity Australia was established in 1988. Nationally, over 80 homes have been completed. Habitat homes are located in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. Habitat's Domestic Fund has expanded rapidly and is planning to complete another 20 homes in Australia by the end of 2010.
Habitat for Humanity's National office in Sydney acts as a resource centre and facilitator for all Habitat projects throughout Australia. An international board of directors determines Habitat for Humanity policy and monitors HFH operations around the world.
