1976 Habitat for Humanity International founded in Americus, Georgia, USA, by Millard Fuller and his wife Linda; in September, construction begins on House No. 1 in San Antonio, Texas, Habitat’s first affiliate.
1979 HFHI headquarters moves from Millard Fuller’s law office to a renovated house next door; the first Habitat house in Americus is built.
1983

HFHI begins operations in Asia-Pacific with a pilot program in Khammam, India.


HFHI declares the third Sunday in September as the first International Day of Prayer and Action for Human Habitat.

1984 Former US President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, become Habitat partners and the first Jimmy Carter Work Project is held in New York City.
1987

Student programs begin with the first Campus Chapter at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.


HFHI headquarters moves to 121 Habitat Street in Americus, Georgia

1988

The first affiliate in Australia begins.


The Global Village and Corporate Donor departments established.

1989

Hurricane Hugo hits South Carolina; all Habitat homes in the state survive the storm.


First HFH Affiliate in Australia

1992 US President Bill Clinton and Vice-President Al Gore work on a Habitat for Humanity house in Atlanta, Georgia.
1993 The 20,000th Habitat house built worldwide is dedicated, in Americus.

The Church Relations program formed.


The Entebbe Initiative is begun and affiliates around the world are expected to tithe part of the funds they raise.

1994 The 30,000th Habitat house built worldwide is dedicated, in Americus.
1995

Building on Faith Week is introduced as an annual celebration of church partnerships.


HFHI headquarters moves to a fully-renovated three-story complex at 322 West Lamar Street in downtown Americus.

1999

Jimmy Carter Work Project held for the first time in Asia. About 5,000 volunteers complete 100 houses in the Philippines.


Habitat’s 80,000th house is dedicated, in Mexico City.

2000 Habitat’s 100,000th house is dedicated in September, in New York City.
2001 Jimmy Carter Work Project held in South Korea. More than 9,000 volunteers build 120 houses.
2003

Former US President Jimmy Carter and former Zambia President Kenneth David Kaunda attend grand opening of HFHI Global Village & Discovery Visitor Center in Americus.

Habitat’s 150,000th house is dedicated, in Romania.


HFH Australia commences support of international program

2004 Habitat builds its 10,000th house in India, the Philippines passes the 7,900-house mark and Sri Lanka passes the 3,800-house mark.

Jimmy Carter Work Project held in Puebla and Veracruz, Mexico.
2005

Major rebuilding programs get under way in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand after the deadly Indian Ocean tsunami.


Habitat launches Operation Home Delivery to help people left homeless by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on the US Gulf coast.


Five-year indiaBUILDS program launched to house 25,000 people in India by 2010


HFHI dedicates its 200,000th house and celebrates the fact that some one million people are living in Habitat houses worldwide. The 200,001st house is dedicated in Kanyakumari, India.


Church leader and former business executive Jonathan Reckford appointed chief executive officer of HFHI after founders Millard & Linda Fuller step down.

2006

Habitat helps reconstruction efforts for earthquake victims in Pakistan and Yogyakarta, Indonesia.


Bangladesh and Mongolia each celebrate their 500th house.


Jimmy Carter Work Project, signature event for indiaBUILDS, held in October in Lonavala, near Mumbai, India. More than 1,500 international and local volunteers build 100 houses.


Nepal marks its 1,500th house milestone.

HFHI opens an administrative headquarters in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, USA

2007

Habitat publishes its first report mapping the state of poverty housing in Asia-Pacific region


Jimmy Carter Work Project held in Los Angeles, California, USA

2008

Habitat responds to earthquake in southwestern China and cyclone in Myanmar


Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project held in Gulf Coast, USA


Habitat’s 300,000th house scheduled to be dedicated: an estimated 1.5 million people have foundations for better lives thanks to Habitat for Humanity.
