Just Imagine

When you are born into a poor family, you have few choices in life. Here at Rach Gia in Vietnam, families were so poor they had no choice but to build huts from garbage and live at the edge of the stinking dump where they worked every day. It’s awful, the children are exposed to infection and disease and few attend school.

Without the help of Australians, children would be trapped here forever.

The Rainbow Village

Our vision, and our proven experience, is that decent shelter is the foundation for families to work their way out of poverty. Habitat is committed to re-housing the families from Rach Gia into safe, decent homes. The Rainbow Village development will provide decent, permanent houses, water and sanitation facilities, a school and new ways for families to earn income.

Progress Report

February 2008 - a partnership agreement between Habitat, Catalyst and Kieng Gang Union Friendship Organisation was signed and a baseline survey for assessment of the livelihood and poverty factors commenced. March 2008 - Habitat’s Global Village team of 12 volunteers rolled their sleeves up and helped build.  May 2008 - the school has been constructed, teachers and administrators hired and 76 children received monthly scholarships. They now attend school daily!

Next Steps

74 families currently living at the dumpsite have successfully applied to build a home, the land use approval process is now in progress. Meantime, project staff are developing job opportunities for families, employment of a few members of the Rach Gia community in a seafood processing factory has already changed their lives forever.

Together we are building new homes and employment.

Without a safe, secure home, many children don’t have a future. That’s true not only at Rach Gia, but also in the Red River Delta where 750 families are living in appalling conditions. Their houses are falling down, the water supply is contaminated and filthy causing disease and infection. The children suffer the most – diarrhea is endemic, mothers feel helpless as their little ones cry with the gut-wrenching pain.

There is no safety net here – if your crop fails you go hungry, if you can’t get work your children have no place to sleep, if nothing changes – you’re trapped.

With the help of people like you and Habitat for Humanity, families can rebuild their homes, build safe water and sanitation facilities and access micro-credit to fund small businesses to build secure livelihoods for their families.
