Every day 3,000 people are dying in India. India’s official count of coronavirus cases surpassed 20 million on Tuesday, nearly doubling in the past three months, while the official death count passed 220,000. India Crisis Update | Our impact: So far, Habitat

India Crisis Update | Our impact: So far, Habitat have developed 16 Covid-19 Care Centres in 8 cities, with the capacity to serve approx. 1,975 people. More than 4,000 people have already been served.

Where appropriate, increased capacity will remain in place after the pandemic abates, strengthening the healthcare system for India’s future.

To support with additional staffing capacity, our local government partners are recruiting surge staff on a contract basis, and requisitioning practical support from medical residents and final year medical students.

Habitat for Humanity also continues to work with local communities across India, to deliver long-term housing and community infrastructure projects, and support local Covid-19 responses through the delivery of emergency hygiene and family food kits.

📢 Every second that goes by, four new cases of COVID-19 are being reported in India. India needs our support today.

⭕hat are the funding priorities? ⭕Habitat for Humanity India have worked with the local government partners in some of the worst-hit states to identify the next ten priority healthcare centres needed. Each Centre costs $51,500 depending on size and location, and hosts between 60 and 100 beds (at a 6-foot distance to allow for appropriate distancing and hygiene control measures). At the moment we are focusing our efforts to build new Covid-19 Care Centres in Maharashtra (Pune and Ahmednagar), Uttar Pradesh (Ayodhya and Noida) and Rajasthan (Alwar).

📢 Emergency Appeal 📢 India Covid-19 Crisis. Every second, four new cases of COVID-19 are being reported in India. A devastating number of over 200,000 people have lost their lives to the virus. Hospitals have reached breaking point and are turning away patients who are desperate for oxygen. The country is now reporting more than two-fifths of the world's Covid-19 cases. Our hearts go to India and our Habitat India office during these challenging times.

Our Emergency Response:
With dedicated hospitals and Covid-19 beds in the country at full capacity, it is devastating that people are dying on the streets outside hospitals, as the country struggles to cope.

In partnership with local government providers, Habitat is working to deliver ‘Covid-19 Care Centres’ to equip underused healthcare and government buildings to increase capacity of:

⭕oxygen systems
⭕drinking water
⭕hygiene facilities
⭕beds and mattresses
⭕hygiene products
⭕sufficient PPE for healthcare workers

By helping more families build or improve the places they call home, we also can build healthier, equitable and resilient communities for generations to come. This is true for Janaki’s children who were of primary school age back in 2011, but are now young adults. Thanks to their home they have a secure, dry, well-lit place to continue their studies. “We are so happy and grateful for the volunteers who joined their hands to build our house.”- Janaki

That smile that comes from owning your own home! In South Aus, Von moved into her Habitat home late last year, and spent a day out on site helping finish off another Habitat home as part of her sweat equity.

Justin and Helena lost absolutely everything in the Black Summer fires and don’t have the means to do all the work required to re-establish their property. Our wonderful volunteers paid a visit helping them clear debris, plant trees, and re-establish paths and stone steps around the property, as part of our Bushfire Recovery Program.

Home partner Krishna said, “The Habitat house built 10 years ago opened us up to live our lives in a new way. We built our new house last year, but we always remember that Bamboo house which was built by our angels from Australia.”

They have built a shed on the right side of the house for raising a cow. They sell milk and some vegetables from the farm as their livelihood.
