Another great day in NSW on our Bushfire Recovery Program. Volunteers worked hard helping Justin and Helena - who lost their homes to the Black Summer fires - by re-establishing
paths and stone steps, clearing green waste, stacking chopped wood, planting out trees, and more!

Home ownership in Battambang province, Cambodia, p

Home ownership in Battambang province, Cambodia, provides the foundation for improving health outcomes, security, and livelihoods. The “Building homes, water and sanitation facilities in Cambodia” project, implemented by Habitat for Humanity in partnership with @dfat ‘s #ANCP and with the support of @CommunitiesforCommunities (C4C), has changed the lives of 52 vulnerable families and hundreds of school children to date.
Every donation made to Habitat for Humanity Australia for this project is combined with funding from the Australian Government to reach more people. Since we have committed to contribute at least $1 for every $5 we receive from the Australian government, C4C’s support allows us to extend our programs and impact the lives of more people.

The three-year project, to be completed in June 2022, will support 83 families in Battambang province through housing and latrine construction and maintenance, along with training/awareness activities and livelihoods development. At least 2,000 students will have improved access to a safer and improved learning environment through 3 major school renovations along with access to clean water and hygiene promotion.

Sum’s family is one who has received support through the project.
“I feel relieved, I am healthier, I can do my daily job properly, and my family is getting better. My old house was rotten, and I always worried that it would fall on my children. By partnering with families to build stronger, more disaster-resilient and more energy-efficient housing, we have seen how adequate, safe and resilient shelter can contribute to both the immediate security and long-term well-being of families while reducing a home’s environmental impact. Around the world, Habitat builds and renovates homes with this in mind, increasing the use of sustainable natural resources and construction practices while reducing the emission of greenhouse gases throughout a home’s life cycle.

A family of men came together to volunteer and bui

A family of men came together to volunteer and build a Menstrual Hygiene block for the girls at the local school so they could have a safe space to deal with their first periods in school with dignity.

In partnership with @DFAT and @_WaterforWomen, Habitat for Humanity Australia and @HabitatforHumanityFiji are working on improving Water, Sanitation and Hygiene services in Fiji.

Nalaba District School located Fiji, there are one of six schools where Habitat for Humanity Fiji is piloting the build of Menstrual Hygiene Management blocks (MHM). With the support of Habitat for Humanity Fiji plumbers, Nalaba District School Manager Akini Seru has been leading the build of the School’s MHM block.

53 year-old Akini called on his brothers and cousins to help him build the block to provide a space for girls to deal with their first menses in school with dignity.

38 year-old volunteer Epeli Raganivatu had this to say: “Building the MHM facility is something I’m truly proud of. When I attended the school, this was something that was not promoted and girls would often get teased in school if they had their menses during school hours.” Menstrual Hygiene is still a taboo topic in some of our communities here in Fiji. So this move by a family of men to come together to build a MHM block not only helps young girls deal with their menses in a more dignified way, but it also challenges our conservative way of discussing menstrual hygiene within our communities.

🩸 Today is World Menstrual Hygiene Day. 🩸 A day to recognise period poverty and the stigma that girls, women and non-binary people face. Achieving menstrual health and hygiene requires access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene facilities and services, as well as access to appropriate sanitary products, and relevant information about self-care and the menstrual cycle. It also requires a respectful environment that is free from stigma – and allows girls, women, and gender non-binary people the freedom to participate in all aspects of life, no matter what time of the month.

In partnership with @DFAT and @_WaterforWomen, Habitat for Humanity Australia and @HabitatforHumanityFiji are working on improving Water, Saniation and Hygiene services in Fiji. To improve school attendance, improve wellbeing, and ensure dignity while menstruating, Habitat Fiji is empowering teachers and strengthening the curriculum to demystify menstruation and educate the students on the importance of hygiene, so girls and women feel supported by their communities.

Along with engaging communities in the necessity of menstrual hygiene, Habitat Fiji has been improving sanitation facilities in the schools, including construction of menstrual hygiene management facilities.

5 ways women and girls benefit from improved menstrual health and hygiene:
1. For adults, being able to consistently go to work to earn an income for themselves and their families
2. For youths, going to and staying at school to get a decent education
3. Improved physical health with a reduced risk of urinary or reproductive organ infections
4. Freedom to participate in community events and recreation activities
5. Greater self-confidence and freedom in their day-to-day lives.

Habitat Partner Family | Meet Ram | Thirty-year-o

Habitat Partner Family | Meet Ram | Thirty-year-old Ram gained his freedom after the Nepalese Government outlawed the bonded labour system in 2008.

Ram worked to pay off a debt. He was tricked into working for little or no pay, with no control over the family’s debt. Most or all the money he earned went to pay off their loan, but invariably the value of his work became greater than the original sum of money borrowed.

He left his village in western Nepal to work as a cook in Malaysia when his eldest son Shisir, now 6, was just over a week old. He was torn between taking on a job that would ease their financial burden and leaving behind his wife Lalita and infant son who were both suffering from jaundice.

Although Ram was anxious and even depressed during the four years he was in Malaysia, he worked hard to realise his dream of improving his family’s life.

With support from Habitat, Ram and his family finally have a house they can call home. He is currently working as a mason in his community, earning enough so he does not have to leave his family again.

“After building our house, my hope for life changed. I plan to work hard here in Nepal, so I can see my boys sleeping soundly. I always think about how beautiful their dreams must be, and I want to make my kids’ dreams a reality by providing them with the best education I can, so they can live a life they deserve.”
