In a letter of congratulations to Habitat and the 100 women build team in 2011 our then Prime Minister Julia Gillard said to the volunteers, “Adequate housing provides more than just a place to sleep: it gives people a secure foundation on which to build a better future. By helping local women build their own homes you are opening up a new world of opportunity for them, their families and their communities.” We thank the 100 women for the forever lasting impact they left in Nepal.

Meet Kala | Habitat Partner Family Series | Kala, her husband, and their daughter Anita have known difficult times but their future looks brighter now with the stability and security of a Habitat home. "My family and I had never imagined that we would have something to call our own because, for us, it is tough to earn 200 – 300 Nrs per day. How can we imagine even buying land. I feel fortunate that in my lifetime, the government made this possible by giving us a piece of land and Habitat for Humanity helping us build a house where we can sleep soundly. Now we don't have to worry about the annual floods nor the earthquakes.” - Kala. At Habitat, we work with the world’s most vulnerable families to give them a hand up and Kala and her husband could not be more deserving of their new home. Meet Chandra | Habitat Partner Family Series | Chandra and his wife have led a challenging and difficult life both having physical disabilities affecting their ability to walk and at times work however despite that they have overcome their difficulties to provide and support their children with the support our donors, volunteers and partners. "But now I feel secure; I have a house which is ours.Now I only pray for God to give me enough strength so I can work and give both my children good education for their bright future.”- Chandra. At Habitat, we partner with the world’s most vulnerable families to bring them a brighter and better future. In NSW, we've been working in partnership with a vulnerable women’s service that provides support and accommodation for women and their children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, often due to domestic violence. With the help of our wonderful volunteers, we've been able to undertake painting and small repairs to make this accomodation space safe and secure for women and children in need.

Did you have a cup of water today or a tea or a coffee?☕ How is water 💧 important to your home and family life, your livelihood, your cultural practices, your wellbeing, your local environment?

780 million people living without access to clean water and 2.2 billion dont have access to sanitation and hygiene. We are working to tackle the global water crisis and support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030 through our international programs. In partnership with @DFAT #ancp We work in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Myanmar, Fiji, Nepal and Vietnam supporting communities to access improved water and sanitation.This includes construction of new or improved water supply facilities such as wells, water tanks and water treatment systems, as well as sanitation facilities such as drainage, toilets/latrines and bathing/handwashing facilities. These types of physical interventions are delivered in conjunction with training for families, communities and schoolchildren aimed at changing behaviours for improved management of water resources and hygienic practices. #PartnershipforRecovery

Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity has helped over 35 million people gain access to new or improved housing around the world. Through advocacy and training, Habitat helped an additional 9.9 million globally people gain the potential to improve their housing conditions last year.

To day is World Health day and we have an update from the field with our Habitat #ImpactStories | Improving housing and health is the aim of Habitat for Humanity. The village of Prek Trob, Cambodia, has seen health outcomes improve due to being part of a Habitat for Humanity housing and hygiene promotion activities in Cambodia, supported by @CommunitiesforCommunities. Illness caused by unhygienic practices has reduced by 23% in 2020 compared to 2019. The 3 year long project has been focusing on housing support and hygiene awareness-raising in the community and the local primary school. Chhonlai, a member of the community states, "Before the project started, there have been lots of people who were infected with disease because they lack access to hygiene and sanitation. I would like to say thank you to Habitat for Humanity for all the support.” This prohect is in partnership with @DFAT #ancp #parternshipsforrecovery.

Meet Rita | Habitat Partner Family Series | When the devastating earthquake hit Nepal in April 2015, Rita’s mud and brick house collapsed in less than a minute. Rita, who was only ten at the time, had to abandon her ancestral home and move with her parents and two siblings into a makeshift shelter of walls made of plastic sheets and a corrugated metal roof. Rita and her family lived in their one room shack for 4 years until they partnered with Habitat and Global Village volunteers to build a safe ne whom for Rita and her family to live in. 🚸 Habitat #ImpactStories | Hygiene Education begins at School: Teaching children about the importance of good hygiene practices is an effective way to influence positive changes in community behaviour. A remote primary school in Prek Trob village, Cambodia, has benefitted from Habitat for Humanity’s school engagement and education activists supported by @communitiesforcommunities . As a result of the education program, the teachers now see the benefit and importance of including hygiene and sanitation activities and have instituted them into their weekly teaching schedule. Mr.Sean Kean, School Director, believes the program helped support the students during the Covid 19 pandemic, "Because most of my students understood hygiene and handwashing… they did not feel the full impact of COVID 19.” In partnership with @dfat #ancp #partnershipsforrecovery 👍🏼

I personally feel that this opportunity would benefit anyone, but I think that it was an incredibly important experience to have early in my life, as the way that it has changed my perception of the world and outlook on life is immense. Also, it is so much fun, and in addition to the hard yet rewarding work, Habitat ensures that you experience culture, food, people and local adventures – when I went to Cambodia the entire team spent an afternoon on the bamboo trains!" 🛠️This month marks 10 years since 100 Australian women travelled to build 10 homes ‘hand-in-hand’ with a community in Itahari, Nepal. 🏠 We reflect on the incredible difference they made in the lives of the women and their families. It is amazing what can come of a group of passionate women when they work together towards a worthy cause. This month we also celebrate the strength and resilience of these women, and all women in the Habitat family - donors, partners, beneficiaries, staff and volunteers.
