Local Village Build, New South Wales

8th - 9th October 2021

The bush fires that raged across the country over the 2019 new year period gripped the nation and had a devastating effect on so many. 25 people, and over 1 billion animals lost their lives. 10 million hectares of land, and over 2,000 homes, including whole towns, were completely destroyed.

So much was lost, but we can all play our part in the recovery. Habitat for Humanity Australia has committed to providing recovery services to fire-affected families. On our Local Village build you will be on the ground, now that the smoke has cleared, restoring hope to families and communities affected.

Australians responded quickly and with large amounts of support while the fires were burning. The dust and ash have cleared and it is still a crucial time for families who need our help. With your support as a volunteer, Habitat will help salvage and rebuild, assisting homeowners.

You will work alongside the families affected, helping clean up, salvage, sort and pile debris including rebuilding homes, sheds, outbuildings, fencing and trees. As a team we will achieve so much more in a few days than the families would have achieved in months, saving them time, money and worry.

Make a difference all while making new friends, in the amazing landscape of the Southern Highlands*.

*Please note we may need to change locations at a later date to elsewhere in NSW.

Friday:

Begin day one by meeting your team for breakfast at a charming local café. Then drive to meet with your first partner family either renovating damaged homes or clearing bush fire debris. After the work is finished for the day check in to your accommodation and unwind in the evening at your hotel and enjoy a glass of wine in town. We have some great suggestions for local restaurants which will be provided to you in a travel guide.

 

Saturday:

You will meet your team onsite this morning and spend day two with your second partner family either renovating damaged homes or clearing bush fire debris. For the evening the team will all meet up and share a farewell dinner together at a delicious local restaurant. As the day comes to a close you can relax at your hotel and reflect on what you have achieved as a team over the past two days.

 

Sunday:

This is a free day where you can either depart home or venture around the area with some fantastic local activities. We have great recommendations for you to enjoy on various activities and tours in the area.

Fundraising Contribution

Once you register to a Local Village build you commit to fundraising $1,000 for Habitat’s programs.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible and goes towards the Bushfire Recovery Program and families through a wider program in the Asia Pacific region.

What's Not Included

What’s Not Included in your costs:

Volunteers are responsible for booking these on their own but the Habitat team is happy to assist you with your search

  • Transport to and from the site each day (you will drive your own vehicle)
  • Optional Sunday Activity
  • Accommodation
  • Dinner on Friday evening
  • Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning

COVID-19 Precautions

If you register for this build and your borders close due to COVID-19 before the build we will put your funds on hold until you can once again cross the border. 

Note: this experience will be limited to the first 15 people to register. Strict Covid-19 precautions will be taken to minimise risk to volunteers and the local community. In the case of Covid-19 affecting the dates or location (including border restrictions) of the build all build-related expenses can be refunded (excluding travel costs), and funds raised transferred to a build at a later date.

Should for any reason the Local Village Build have to be postponed to a later date, we will transfer all costs and fundraising on to another experience of your choosing (including overseas) with Habitat for Humanity Australia
